A concise guide to interpretation modes, ethics, and accuracy standards — and how providers can work effectively with professional interpreters.

Professional interpretation is a disciplined skill built on training, ethics, and technique. Understanding the fundamentals helps both interpreters and the professionals they serve communicate accurately and respectfully.

Modes of interpretation

  • Consecutive — the speaker pauses to let the interpreter render each segment. Common in medical, legal, and one-on-one settings.
  • Simultaneous — the interpreter renders speech as it happens, often via equipment. Common in conferences and large proceedings.
  • Sight translation — the interpreter reads a document and renders it orally. Useful for forms and short texts.

Core ethical principles

  • Accuracy and completeness — render everything without addition, omission, or distortion.
  • Confidentiality — protect all information learned during the assignment.
  • Impartiality — remain neutral; avoid advising, advocating, or inserting opinions.
  • Role boundaries — interpret only; do not take on tasks outside the interpreter role.
  • Professional conduct — decline assignments involving conflicts of interest.

Working effectively with an interpreter

Providers get the best results when they speak directly to the limited-English speaker, use plain language, pause frequently, and avoid idioms and jargon. A brief pre-session helps align on terminology and sensitive topics. Afterward, confirming the speaker’s understanding closes the loop.

Why training matters

Bilingualism is not interpretation. Trained interpreters manage cognitive load, maintain accuracy under pressure, handle specialized terminology, and uphold ethics. Relying on untrained bilinguals or family members introduces error and risk in any high-stakes setting.
